RSC Applied Interfaces publishes interdisciplinary work with an applied focus, which can be read for free here. To celebrate the excellent articles that have been published so far in our journal, we asked some of our authors to discuss their work in more detail.
In this post, we hear from Rosa Catania, Paul Beales and Lars Jeuken, as they discuss their recently published article entitled ‘Solid-supported polymer–lipid hybrid membrane for bioelectrochemistry of a membrane redox enzyme‘.
Meet the authors
Rosa Catania Rosa Catania earned her PhD from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Nottingham in 2018, where she developed polymers bearing carbohydrate recognition elements for targeted drug delivery. Following her PhD, she was awarded a two-year EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship, expanding her research into the design of responsive membranes for ultrasound-triggered applications. In 2020, she joined the School of Chemistry at the University of Leeds as a Research Fellow, where she has developed expertise in membrane protein reconstitution, and in the biophysics and bioengineering of membranes. Her work combines hybrid polymer–lipid membranes in solid-supported and protocell systems to study membrane protein reconstitution, function, and stability. Paul Beales
Paul Beales was promoted to Professor of Soft Matter and Biophysics in the School of Chemistry at the University of Leeds in April 2022. He obtained his PhD from the Soft Matter Physics group at the University of Edinburgh before undertaking postdoc positions in chemical engineering departments at Princeton and Yale universities in the US. Returning to the UK in November 2010, he started his independent research group in Leeds, which applies soft matter principles to engineer biological systems. In particular, the core focus of his group is on biomimetic model membranes and vesicles. These systems allow insight into fundamental biology as well as the development of novel biotechnologies, such as engineering artificial cells that replicate some of the functional characteristics of living matter. Lars Jeuken became Professor in 2017 at the University of Leeds and moved to the Leiden Institute of Chemistry, Leiden University, NL in 2021, where he earlier received his PhD in 2001. After his PhD and 2 years of Post Doctoral research at the University of Oxford, he received a 5-year David Phillips fellowship from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), UK, which he used to developed solid-supported membrane systems for bioelectrochemistry. He received an ERC fellowship in 2011 and his research group currently aims to develop novel biophysical methods to study respiratory membrane enzymes and use this knowledge in the development of vesicle-based biohybrid systems for solar fuel production.
