TPCB Symposium poster prize winner

The 14th Annual Tri-Institutional Chemical Biology Symposium took place on 11th September at The Rockefeller University in New York. The Symposium was a great success and we look forward to supporting it again next year.

The winner of the Chemical Science poster prize was Chen Chen, pictured below.  Congratulations to Chen!

EuroBIC 14

This August saw the occasion of the 14th European Biological Inorganic Chemistry Conference (EuroBIC), held at the University of Birmingham in the UK. With an excellent line up of internationally renowned plenary and keynote speakers the event was a huge success, attracting around 400 attendees.

The Royal Society of Chemistry was pleased to support the event, offering poster prizes of books and book vouchers. The winners of RSC vouchers were:

  • Raul Berrocal-Martin (University of Glasgow) – Dalton Transactions Poster Prize
  • Wilma Neumann (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) – Metallomics Poster Prize
  • Ying Zhou (University of Hong Kong) – ChemComm Poster Prize
  • Leon Jenner (University of East Anglia) – Chemical Science Poster Prize

Meet Luis M. Campos: Chemical Science Associate Editor

We are pleased to announce that Professor Luis M. Campos has joined Chemical Science as an Associate Editor.

Luis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Columbia University. He was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and moved at the age of 11 to Los Angeles, California. He received a B.Sc. in Chemistry from CSU Dominguez Hills in 2001, and a Ph.D. from the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at UCLA in 2006 working under the supervision of M. A. Garcia-Garibay and K. N. Houk. At UCLA, he was awarded the NSF Predoctoral Fellowship, Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship, and the Saul & Silvia Winstein Award for his graduate research in solid-state photochemistry. Switching to materials chemistry, he went to UCSB as a UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellow to work under the supervision of C. J. Hawker at the Materials Research Laboratory.

At Columbia, his group’s research interests lie in polymer chemistry, self-assembly, and organic electronic materials. To date, he has co-authored over 80 articles and 12 patents; and he has received various awards, including the ACS Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award, ONR Young Investigator Award, NSF CAREER Award, 3M Non-Tenured Faculty Award, I-APS Young Faculty Award, the Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry Award for Early Excellence, and the Polymers Young Investigator Award. In addition to these research accolades, Luis has been recognized for his pedagogical contributions by the Cottrell Scholar Award, Columbia University Presidential Teaching Award, and the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award.

Meet Stephen Goldup: Chemical Science Associate Editor

We are happy to introduce Professor Stephen Goldup as Chemical Science Associate Editor, handling submissions in the area of supramolecular chemistry.

Steve obtained an MChem degree from the University of Oxford where he began his research career with a Part II project in the group of Sir Prof. Jack Baldwin. He continued his research training with a PhD in natural product synthesis under the supervision of Prof. Tony Barrett before shifting focus to apply his synthetic skills to the realisation of mechanically interlocked non-natural products during post doctoral work with Prof. David Leigh at the University of Edinburgh where in 2007 he was appointed as Fixed Term Lecturer in Organic Chemistry. In 2008 he moved to Queen Mary with the award of a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship and in October 2009 he was awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship.

In October 2014 the group moved to the University of Southampton where Steve took up the position of Associate Professor. In August 2017, Steve was promoted to Professor of Chemistry. Research in the Goldup Group focusses on the synthesis of novel mechanically interlocked molecules and their application as sensors, catalysts and materials.

Steve is keen to receive submissions in his area of expertise, particularly in supramolecular chemistry, interlocked molecules, molecular machines, stimuli responsive systems, and sensing. Meet Vincent Artero: Chemical Science Associate Editor

We are delighted to welcome Professor Vincent Artero as Chemical Science Associate Editor, handling submissions in the area of energy.

Vincent Artero graduated from the Ecole Normale Supérieure (Ulm) and the University Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris 6). He received his Ph.D. in 2000 under the supervision of Professor A. Proust and Professor P. Gouzerh. His doctoral work dealt with organometallic derivatives of polyoxometalates. After a postdoctoral stay at the University of Aachen (Aix la Chapelle) with Professor U. Kölle, he joined in 2001 the group of Professor M. Fontecave in Grenoble where he obtained a position in the Life Science Division of the CEA.

Since 2016, he leads the SolHyCat group as Research Director in the Laboratory of Chemistry and Biology of Metals (a research unit cooperated by CEA, CNRS and Univ. Grenoble Alpes) in Grenoble. Vincent Artero received the “Grand Prix Mergier-Bourdeix de l’Académie des Sciences” in 2011. In 2012, he was granted with a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). He currently acts as Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the ARCANE Excellence Laboratory Network (LABEX) for bio-driven chemistry in Grenoble and co-chair of the French Research Network (GDR) on solar fuels.

His current research interests are in the structural and functional modelisation of hydrogenases, the design of artificial organometallic proteins and the photo- and electro-production of hydrogen. Old and new spectroscopic techniques team up to decipher intricate alkaloids

Cutting-edge strategies set to increase our access to chemical space after researchers use them to verify unprecedented structures

Scientists have identified the structures of two marine natural products that were previously considered too complicated to characterise.1 A combination of well-known spectroscopic tools and new experiments probing orientation-dependant bonding allowed the team to unpick the structures.

Natural products are a rich source of pharmacologically-active compounds. The problem is: they are often difficult to purify and identify.

Gary Martin, of Merck Research Laboratories in the US, and Kirk Gustafson, from the US National Cancer Institute, have been studying and characterising natural products for years. ‘There has been a continuing flow of incorrectly reported complex natural product structures into the published literature … at present, there are more than 1200 structure revision papers. Stopping investigators from reporting incorrect structures in the first place will free up their time to pursue and identify new molecular entities,’ they say.
