Recognizing Our 2023 Editorial Board Members

With the end of 2023, the RSC Americas office would like to take the opportunity to recognize all of the Editorial and Advisory board members who joined the RSC’s journals over 2023, especially those who have begun since we last recognized new board members in February 2023. It is only through the hard work and guidance of these outstanding researchers that the Royal Society of Chemistry is able to maintain its essential community focus, while being a leading international scientific publisher. Thank you all for everything you have done this year, and we look forward to 2024!

Highlighting WesTEC 2023: Advancing Possiblities

For the seventh year, the Royal Society of Chemistry was delighted to support the Western Canada Operations Science and Technical Excellence Conference (WesTEC), hosted by Dow Canada. This year marked the 32nd WesTEC, which showcases and recognizes outstanding developments and achievements within Dow Canada. This year’s theme of “Advancing Possibilities” serves to recognize the challenges the world faces, and the vital role of the chemical sciences in meeting those challenges.

Dow’s dedication to create the world’s first net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions ethylene and derivatives complex, as well as their commitment to transition completely to net-zero emissions by 2050, demonstrates their determination to build a more sustainable planet. The Royal Society of Chemistry is proud to support Dow’s efforts and play a role in highlighting the outstanding achievements of the scientists working there.

As in previous years, the Royal Society of Chemistry was thrilled to sponsor the Best Presentation and Best Exhibit awards at the 2023 WesTEC. This year, the Best Presentation award was given to Ramadan Ahmed and the Best Exhibit award was given to Jenny Boutros and Steven Stack. Congratulations to the winners, and we look forward to next year!

Congratulations to the winners of the 2023 Certificates of Undergraduate Excellence!

We are proud to announce the winners of this year’s Certificates of Undergraduate Excellence, the Royal Society of Chemistry’ recognition program for university students in North America. This is the first group of award winners after the award was relaunched in 2022 to focus on the achievements of undergraduate students in the chemical sciences. The recipients were selected by their departments for their exceptional dedication, performance, and engagement in coursework and research.

77 students received the Certificate of Undergraduate Excellence this year from 53 institutions across North America, and each winner will receive (in addition to the certificate) their department’s choice of:

  • RSC Affiliate membership
  • A printed edition of the Merck Index
  • An invitation to join a publishing training session provided by RSC journal editorial teams

Click here to see a full list of this year’s outstanding winners, and to learn how your institution can enroll in the Certificate of Undergraduate Excellence program for the 2023-2024 cycle.

Join the Materials Horizons and Nanoscale Horizons Community Board!

Do you know an early career researcher or PhD candidate interested in materials science and/or nanoscience? Are they interested in participating the development of two of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s journals? If so, now is the time to nominate them for the Materials Horizons and Nanoscale Horizons Community Board!

The Community Board is a group of early career researchers and students who work with the journals’ Executive Editors and Editorial Boards to guide how the journals can best support the community of students, postdoctoral researchers, and early career researchers interested in Materials Horizons and Nanoscale Horizons. They provide feedback on the community’s perception of the journals, help guide the journals’ engagement through suggested themed collections and Focus Article topics, and suggest education-focused initiatives for the journals to support the community.

If you are interested in nominating someone for the Materials Horizons and Nanoscale Horizons Community Board, submissions are open through July 19th, 2023. Check out the post on the Materials Horizons Blog for full details on eligibility, nomination process, and more details about the role of the Community Board.

Open for submissions: RSC Applied Interfaces and RSC Applied Polymers

We are proud to announce that the two newest journals in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s portfolio, RSC Applied Interfaces and RSC Applied Polymers, are now open for submissions! Check out our previous post announcing the journals to learn about their editors-in-chief, and read below to learn more about the journals themselves.

Both journals are Gold Open Access, and free to publish until mid-2025.

RSC Applied Interfaces is a dedicated, interdiciplinary journal for cutting edge research on the applications of surfaces and interfaces. The journal’s scope is broad, welcoming topics ranging from protective coatings to electrochemical interfaces to biomedical coatings, and everything in between.

RSC Applied Polymers is focused on the application of both natural and synthetic polymers, explored with experimental and computational sutdies. The journal’s scope covers a range of applications of polymers, including advances in materials, biology, energy, and more.

Announcing RSC Applied Polymers and RSC Applied Interfaces!

We are proud to announce the launch of two new journals from the Royal Society of Chemistry! RSC Applied Polymers and RSC Applied Interfaces are interdisciplinary and gold open access, expanding the Royal Society of Chemistry’s existing portfolio and providing a welcoming home for application-focused polymer and interface research.

Both journals will be open for submissions in Spring 2023, and all article processing charges (APCs) for both journals will be waived through mid-2025, letting you freely publish your work so it can be available to all.

Keep reading to learn more about these exciting new journals and their founding Editors-in-Chief!

RSC Applied Polymers

RSC Applied Polymers is focused on the application of polymers, both natural and synthetic, including both experimental and computational studies. This new applied research-focused journal will supplement the Royal Society of Chemistry’s existing journal, Polymer Chemistry, providing an impactful home for work focused on polymer applications.

The journal’s founding Editor-in-Chief is Dr. Emily Pentzer, Associate Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University in the USA, whose extensive experience with applied polymeric material research will help guide RSC Applied Polymers.

RSC Applied Interfaces

RSC Applied Interfaces explores interfacial and surface research with an applied focus. Complementing the Royal Society of Chemistry’s existing materials-focused journals, RSC Applied Interfaces aims to be an impactful, dedicated home for interdisciplinary research in applied interfacial and surface science.

The inaugural Editor-in-Chief is Dr. Federico Rosei, professor and director at the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique, Énergie, Matériaux et Télécommunications in Varennes (QC), Canada. To guide the beginning of RSC Applied Interfaces, he will draw on his research background in nanostructured materials for engineering and materials science applications.

Celebrating WesTEC 2022 with Dow Canada

The Royal Society of Chemistry was proud to again support and celebrate the 31st Western Canada Operations Technical Excellence Conference (WesTEC), hosted by Dow Chemical, which is also marking its 125th anniversary.

This year’s theme of “Mapping the Path2Zero,” highlights the essential role of companies in addressing climate change by moving towards a goal of net zero emissions. Dow has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, and has already unveiled their plans to build a first of its kind net zero carbon integrated ethylene cracker and derivatives site in Fort Saskatchewan. As in previous years, the 2022 WesTEC was an opportunity to highlight the outstanding work in this area being done at Dow Canada, and the Royal Society of Chemistry was glad to be a part of that recognition.

The Royal Society of Chemistry was thrilled to sponsor two awards at the 2022 WesTEC: Best Presentation: Nail Hagar, as well as Best Exhibit: Pabbi Grover and Jordan Gabert. Congratulations to all three winners!
