Arnold Rikli Award 2017

Research Award of the Jorg Wolff Foundation under the patronage of the European Society for Photobiology: Arnold Rikli Award 2017

For photobiological investigations in relation to human beings, we hereby announce the awarding of the 18. Arnold Rikli Prize in the amount of 10.000,– Euro for the year 2017. The prize was originally awarded by the Institute F. Wolff of Riehen, Switzerland and first established in 1989. Jorg Wolff, the brother of the former sponsor, continues this tradition. The prize has been announced by the Jorg Wolff foundation every year since 2006 and stands under the patronage of the European Society for Photobiology (ESP).

The submitted reports should cover investigations on biological effects of optical radiation (ultraviolet, visible, and infrared radiation). The results should show new aspects for diagnostic investigation and/or therapy or provide guidelines for the practical utilization of biologic basics and/or future research with optical radiation.

Unpublished papers, or papers published after January 1, 2015 must be submitted in English language and be delivered to the office address or submitted electronically to the e-mail address mentioned below not later than February 28, 2018. The submission should focus on one area of speciality. An additional abstract of no more than 300 words should outline the research and the significance of it. In the case that the submission is “in cumulo” (five studies at most) a brief explanation should be provided uniting the presentations together. It is desirable to enclose a letter of support for the award nomination.

An independent jury will evaluate the investigations and nominate the winner. The presentation of the award will take place at the Symposium “Licht und Gesundheit” in November 2018 in Berlin (Germany).

The 15th Congress of the European Society for Photobiology

The European Society for Photobiology (ESP), one of the two owner societies of PPS, will be holding the 15th Congress of the European Society for Photobiology in Liège, Belgium, on the 2–6th September 2013. This exciting conference is an important forum for the dissemination of advanced knowledge and technological developments in photobiology, and will generate scientific discussions and facilitate the exchange of new ideas and new collaborations for future research. The ESP Scientific Advisory Board, including the ESP President and PPS Associate Editor Evelyne Sage, have put together a program of sessions on a wide range of topics which cover major streams of photobiological sciences. This includes highly relevant, timely, cutting edge symposia.

Keynote speakers include:

Markus Böhm (Münster, Germany)
 • Novel twists in alpha-MSH-mediated protection against UV irradiation of the skin

Mladen Korbelik (Vancouver, Canada)
 • Engagement of sphingolipids in light-tissue interaction

Santi Nonell (Barcelona, Spain)
 • Genetically-encodable fluorescent singlet oxygen photosensitisers

Janet Morgan (Buffalo, USA)
 • Strategies for targeting cancer stem-like cells with photodynamic therapy

Roman Ulm (Geneva, Switzerland)
 • UV-B photoreceptor signalling

In addition to providing an exciting venue for scientific exchange, Liège is a historical European city and a great place to visit. Early registration ends July 31st, so click here to register today!

2012 ESP Photobiology School

The European Society for Photobiology is pleased to announce the 2012 ESP Photobiology School, taking place in Brixen/Bressanone in South Tyrol, Italy. The purpose of the school is to provide an introductory overview of all main aspects of photobiology, presented by experts in each area.  The intention of the school is to cover the basic principles of photobiology and photochemistry of biomolecules as well as applications of such knowledge in understanding effects of climatic changes, influence of light on biological systems, applications of light in medicine and for other purposes.

The school will include basic lectures in each field that should be attended by all participants as well as optional special lectures in the same fields. The students will have the opportunity to present their results at a poster session. The course may act as a fundament for further research in the photobiological sciences.

The attendants may be MSc- and PhD-students, as well as others who would be interested in an overview of the photobiological sciences. However, the course will be designed for PhD students. The course will end with a short final test and an attendance certificate will be provided.
