C&EN highlights the importance of metallomics research

High-profile paper for Metallomics Board members

Editorial Board member Professor Nigel Robinson of the Durham University, UK, and Advisory Board member Professor Ivano Bertini of the University of Florence, Italy, are authors of a recent paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Copper metallochaperones supply copper to cupro-proteins through copper-mediated protein-protein-interactions and it has been hypothesized that metallochaperones thereby inhibit copper from causing damage en route.   In their paper, Nigel, Ivano and colleagues present evidence in support of this latter role for the cyanobacterial metallochaperone, Atx1.

Sabine Becker wins 2012 Winter Conference Award in Plasma Spectrochemistry

Metallomics Advisory Board member Sabine Becker has been named as the recipient of the 2012 Winter Conference Award in Plasma Spectrochemistry.

The award honours scientists who have made the most noteworthy contributions to the field of plasma spectrochemistry, and will be presented to to Dr Becker during the 2012 Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry to be held in Tucson, Arizona, USA, 9-24 January 2012.  Congratulations Sabine!

Editor of Metallomics, Dr May Copsey, will be attending the conference and would be delighted to meet you there.

Tutorial Review: Studying disease using LC-based metallomics

Chronic exposure of mammals to xenobiotic chemicals (medicinal drugs/toxic metals) may adversely affect metalloprotein synthesis.

Read this excellent tutorial review from Jürgen Gailer and colleagues, one of whom is our Metallomics advisory board member Jose Luis Gomez-Ariza.  They discuss metallomic approaches based on LC-ICP MS and LC-ICP-AES, referring to the interaction of xenobiotics with mammalian organisms.  It’s a must read for everyone in the Metallomics community who studies procedures for sample preparation and analytical protocols that are applied within health-based research.

The tutorial review will be free to access until 1st July.

Study of bacteriophage lambda proteome associations with metals

Read the latest paper from Professor Joseph Caruso, Chair of the Metallomics Editorial Board.

In this study, a metallomics investigation on lambda phage was performed with two-dimensional separations combined with elemental and molecular MS detection for metal screening, size distribution determination and peptide/protein identification.

The results should provide valuable information for lambda phage engineered technologies.

Biometal imaging reviewed

In this Critical Review, newly appointed Advisory Board member Sabine Becker (Research Centre Juelich) and Chair of the Editorial Board Joseph A. Caruso (University of Cincinnati and Metallomics Center of the Americas) introduce three common metal imaging techniques used in biomedical research: synchrotron X-ray fluorescence (SXRF) microscopy, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS).

Trace metal imaging with high spatial resolution: Applications in biomedicine

These analytical techniques are pushing the boundaries of spatial resolution and quantitative analysis resulting in an ability to study the organisation and dynamics of metal cations and metal-containing biomolecules in biological cells and tissues.  Studies are showing that the sensitivity, spatial resolution, specificity and quantification ability of metal imaging techniques is suitable and highly desirable for biomedical research, leading to a better understanding of metal processes in cells and tissues.

Mary Lou Guerinot joins Editorial Board

We are delighted to announce that Professor Mary Lou Guerinot has joined the Metallomics Editorial Board.

Mary Lou is the Ronald and Deborah Harris Professor in the Sciences at Dartmouth College, USA.  She is a molecular geneticist whose principal expertise and research interests are in the area of metal transport and regulation of gene expression by metals.  Plants are the major point of entry for essential metals into the food chain, so her work is laying the foundation for crops that offer sustainable solutions for malnutrition.

BioMetals 2010 – a great start

BioMetals 2010 got off to a great start, with an excellent opening talk by Metallomics Editorial Board member, Nigel Robinson.  The rest of Monday comprised a morning session on arsenic and an afternoon session on sideophores and iron transport.

Among the high-quality talks were:

  • Barry Rosen (Florida International University) on arsenic detoxification
  • Tim McDermott (Montana State University) on advances in microbial arsenite oxidation
  • Jorge Crosa (Oregon Health and Science University) on iron transport in pathogenic vibrios
  • Iain Lamont (University of Otago) on iron acqusition by bacteria in cystic fibrosis patients
  • Pierre Cornelis (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) on iron homeostasis and oxidative stress in P. aeruginosa

Prof. Al Crumbliss (L) and Prof. Partha Basu (R)

We welcome Professor Al Crumbliss of Duke University and Professor Partha Basu of Duquesne University to the Advisory Board of Metallomics.

Prof. Crumbliss researches the mechanisms of reactions of transition metal complexes, and Prof. Basu works on reactions catalyzed by molybdenum enzymes. Find out more about them and their work by clicking on their names above.
