In Memory of Silvia Atrian

Recently, we received the very sad news that a member of our Metallomics community, Silvia Atrian, passed away.

Silvia Atrian was a professor in the Department of Genetics at the University of Barcelona. She received her PhD in Biology from the University of Barcelona in 1984 and was a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Biochemistry at
the University of Edinburgh from 1988-1989.

She, together with her long-time collaborator Mercè Capdevila, made numerous contributions to our community.  Her insightful work exploring what metallothioneins do and why they exist in so many species in so many different biological compartments has helped bring clarity to a complex set of questions.  The genetic framework she used to investigate metallothioneins produced many valuable papers.  In addition to her work, she will be remembered by members of the community for her generosity of spirit and her willingness to work with and help others in the field.  She will be missed and we send our condolences to her family, friends, and co-workers.
