Introducing our New Associate Editor – Xia Huang

We are delighted to introduce Xia Huang as a new Associate Editor for Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology

黄霞教授(清华大学)作为副主编,加入Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology期刊,负责稿件的送审和评审。

 

Xia joins Stuart Khan, Tamar Kohn and Paige Novak as Associate Editors handling submissions to the journal. More information about her research interests is given below.

Xia Huang is a Professor at Tsinghua University, China, where she is a Director for the Division of Water Environment, Vice Director for the State Key Joint Laboratory of Environment Simulation and Pollution Control, and Chair of Academic Committee of Department of Environmental Science and Engineering.  Before starting her career at Tsinghua university, she received her PhD in Environmental Chemistry and Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan.

Professor Huang’s research aims to develop novel processes for wastewater reclamation and resource recovery. Her main interests include membrane based wastewater treatment processes, fouling mechanisms and control, bioelectrochemical systems for enhanced wastewater purification and resource recovery.

New Advisory Board members for Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology

We are delighted to welcome the following new members to the Advisory Board of Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology

  Irini Angelidaki is a Professor at the Technical University of Denmark, Denmark. Her research field is in the development of biotechnological processes for conversion of organic matter to bioenergy, biofuels and biochemicals. Within this, she focuses on microbiology and processes technology; process optimization; molecular methods for characterization of bacteria; pretreatment of biomass; micro- and macro-algae; microbial electrochemistry; and biorefineries.
Nicholas Ashbolt is Professor and Alberta Innovates Translational Health Chair in Waterborne Diseases in the School of Public Health, University of Alberta. His current research focuses on understanding the ecology of saprozoic pathogens in engineered water systems to develop improved management of these water-based and other enteric pathogens in urban water systems. Through his career he has focused on translating microbiological risks into best management practices and regulatory reform; pioneering developments and uptake of quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) into Australian, Canadian, Scandinavia, United States, and WHO drinking, recreational and reuse water guidelines/regulations.
  Joby Boxall is Professor of Water Infrastructure Engineering at the University of Sheffield, UK. His research interests are concerned with understanding and modelling hydraulic, water quality and infrastructure performance throughout the natural and urban environment. His research interests are multi-disciplinary and have a number of cross cutting themes that include research in full-scale live systems, pilot and laboratory systems, with the application of theoretical, computational and analytical approaches. His current focus is largely on potable water distribution systems.
  Amy Childress is Professor and Director of Environmental Engineering in the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. For the past 20 years, her research and scholarly interests have been in the area of membrane processes for water treatment, wastewater reclamation, and desalination. Her research team currently carries out projects on membrane processes for innovative solutions to contaminant and energy challenges; pressure-driven membrane processes as industry standards for desalination and water reuse; membrane bioreactor technology; and colloidal and interfacial aspects of membrane processes.
  Yujie Feng is a Professor of Environmental Engineering at Harbin Institute of Technology, China. Her research interests include bio-energy/resources recovery from waste streams, environmental electrochemistry, microbial electrochemistry systems, environmental risk assessment and removal technology for emergent toxic substances in urban water systems.
  Graham Gagnon  is a Full Professor in the Department of Civil & Resource Engineering at Dalhousie University, Canada. He is the NSERC/Halifax Water Industrial Research Chair in Water Quality & Treatment – where his research lab studies drinking water quality for improving treatment processes and quality at the tap. His lab studies physical chemical processes, biological treatment processes and corrosion processes in drinking water.
  Arjen Hoekstra is a Professor at University of Twente, The Netherlands. His scientific publications cover a wide range of topics related to water, food, energy and trade. Hoekstra pioneered in quantifying the water volumes virtually embedded in trade, thus showing the relevance of a global perspective on water use and scarcity. As creator of the water footprint concept, Hoekstra introduced supply-chain thinking in water management.
  Barbara Kasprzyk-Hordern  is a Professor in Environmental and Analytical Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Bath, UK. Her research is inherently interdisciplinary spanning the four interrelated research areas of environmental, analytical and water sciences, and epidemiology. Her recent interests are related to urban water, pollution and human epidemiology. She is currently researching into the impact of stereochemistry on the fate and effects of micropollutants in aquatic environment and implications for risk assessment and legislation. She is also focussing on new epidemiology approaches for public health assessment via water fingerprinting.
  Tove Larsen is a researcher and member of the directorate at Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology. She is an adjunct professor at the Danish Technical University, DTU. She has dedicated her career to understanding how radical technical innovation can shape sustainable urban water management in a resource-scarce future dominated by dramatic urban growth and climate change. She has worked for more than 20 years on the emerging paradigm of source separation and decentralization, framing and leading a number of innovative inter and transdisciplinary projects.
  Irene Lo is a Chair Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of Environmental Engineering and Management Program at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Her main research areas include magnetic nano-particles and nano-photocatalysts for environmental applications; pollutant migration in soils; food waste and solid waste treatment and management; and remediation technologies for river sediment, contaminated soils and groundwater.
Thanh (Helen) Nguyen is currently an Associate Professor of environmental engineering and a faculty affiliate with the Institute for Genomic Biology at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research group focuses on waterborne pathogens for global water and food safety. Besides a number of projects based in the US, her group is conducting research in developing countries on human resilience to waterborne infectious disease outbreak related to extreme natural events. Her group has published on a wide range of topics related to human health impact of water reuse, food safety, and pathogens in drinking water distribution systems. 
  Zhiyong “Jason” Ren is an Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder, USA. His research group analyzes reaction mechanisms and develops technologies for energy and resource recovery during wastewater treatment, remediation, and water desalination processes.
  Eveline Volcke is a Professor at the University of Ghent, Belgium. Her research is focused on efficient and sustainable process design and control, applying a combination of physical-based modelling and experimental techniques. She has a specific expertise in bioconversion processes. Particular examples concern innovative biological nitrogen removal processes, greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater treatment processes, granular sludge reactors for compact wastewater treatment and anaerobic digestion.
  Aijie Wang is a Professor at the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Professor at the Harbin Institute of Technology, P.R. China. She is the Deputy Director of the National Engineering Laboratory for Industrial Wastewater Treatment, and Head of CAS Key Laboratory for Environmental Biotechnology. Her research interests cover water pollution control and resource recovery, which includes bio-based technology for heavily polluted industrial wastewater treatment, polluted aquatic environment bioremediation, and resources/bioenergy recovery from waste (water)/biosolids.
Jeyong Yoon is a professor in School of Chemical and Biological Engineering College of Engineering at Seoul National University, Korea . He is a president of the Academic Society for Appropriate Technology. His research group studies convergence technology (CDI desalination, Electrochemical resource recovery, Electrode development for oxidant generation, Appropriate technology for safe water) focused on environmental engineering based on electrochemical technology and energy technology to solve global water and energy problem.
Han-Qing Yu is a Professor in the School of Chemistry and Materials Science at the University of Science and Technology of China. His main research interests include biological wastewater treatment, physicochemical water and wastewater treatment.

Kartik Chandran is an Assistant Professor at Columbia University in the City of New York, USA. His research interests include the environmental applications of microbiology and biotechnology such as re-engineering the global nitrogen cycle, sustainable sanitation, public health microbiology, water and wastewater treatment, bioenergetics (including biofuels) and biorefining.

Professor Jun Ma wins Sustainable Water Award 2016

Professor Jun Ma

Professor Jun Ma of the Harbin Institute of Technology and Advisory Board member of Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology has been chosen by the Royal Society of Chemistry as the deserved winner of the Sustainable Water Award 2016. The award recognises his work on the development and application of novel technologies for wastewater treatment processes.

The Royal Society of Chemistry prizes and awards celebrate the achievements by individuals, teams and organisations in advancing the chemical sciences – and rewarding those who undertake excellent work in the chemical sciences across the world.

Jun Ma graduated from Harbin Institute of Technology (BS, MS and PhD), and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Imperial College London (recipient of Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship). He has been a Senior Visiting Scholar at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst as well as the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (EAWAG) at Switzerland. Professor Ma is now the Changjiang Scholar Professor at Harbin Institute of Technology and the Deputy Director of the National Engineering Research Centre of Urban Water Resources, China.

Let’s find out a bit more about them:

Nandita Basu
University of Waterloo, Canada

Nandita is an Assistant Professor of Water Sustainability and Ecohydrology at the University of Waterloo, in Canada. Her research revolves around an interest in the sustainable management of water resources. The question of sustainable management of water is inherently interdisciplinary and requires research at the interfaces of hydrology, biogeochemistry, ecology, social sciences and economics. Her expertise lies at the interface of hydrology and chemistry, but she is also actively involved in collaborations with ecologists, social scientists and economists to explore other interfaces.


Dionysios Dionysiou
University of Cincinnati, USA

Professor Dionysiou is a UNESCO Chair Professor on “Water Access and Sustainability” and a Herman Schneider Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Cincinnati where he teaches courses on drinking water quality and treatment, advanced unit operations for water treatment, advanced oxidation technologies, and physical-chemical processes for water quality control. His research interests include treatment of water contaminated by harmful algal blooms with conventional and advanced technologies, advanced technologies for water treatment, advanced oxidation technologies, transition metal-based chemical oxidation, and nanotechnology.

Ferdi L. Hellweger
Northeastern University, USA

Dr. Hellweger is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northeastern University. His research interests are in the ecology of microbes in surface water systems, including harmful algal blooms in lakes and antibiotic resistance in rivers. He specialises in the development and application of mathematical models, with a focus on agent-based techniques. Locally, he is especially interested in the Charles River and wants to contribute to making it swimmable again. His goal is to build a forecast system that can be used to predict when & where it is safe to swim.


Jun Ma
Harbin Institute of Technology, China

Professor Ma is the Changjiang Scholar Professor at Harbin Institute of Technology and the Deputy Director of the National Engineering Research Center of Urban Water Resources, China. Jun’s interest has been in the area of water and wastewater treatment, he has been working in the processes of oxidation, nanoparticles and membranes.  He is the recipient of China Young Scientist Award, and the Achievement Award of Chiangjiang Scholars (Engineering Science Award) and holds over 80 invention patents and over 180 peer reviewed international journal papers.


Julie Minton
WateReuse Foundation, USA

Julie Minton has been the Director of Research Programs for the WateReuse Research Foundation for nearly five years and previously worked at the Foundation managing research projects.  She is responsible for planning and managing a comprehensive research program and staff.  Collectively, they manage over 50 active projects, worth more than $6 million annually. Ms. Minton has the programmatic responsibility for the Foundation’s fundraising initiatives, federal grants and cooperative agreements and has directed programmatic monitoring, reporting, outputs, and outcomes on multiple federal, state, and partner awards totaling over $20 million. Ms. Minton is also responsible for maintaining collaborative relationships with U.S. and international research organizations, cooperative funding of research programs and projects, and joint outreach activities. She has a B.A. in Biology from St. Mary’s College of Maryland.


Simon Parsons
Scottish Water, UK

Simon Parsons is Director of Strategic Customer Service Planning at Scottish Water. He was formerly Chief Scientist and General Manager of Scientific Services and represented Scottish Water in science, research and public health communities. Simon won the Royal Society of Chemistry’s prestigious Sustainable Water Award for 2014 for advancing the understanding of natural organic matter in water treatment and for the development of treatment processes to improve water quality and sustainability.


Kai Udert
EAWAG, Switzerland

Dr. Udert has a background in environmental engineering. He received his PhD from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich in 2003. After a postdoctoral appointment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he joined the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag) in 2006. His main research focus has been on decentralized wastewater treatment and source separation. Besides working as a researcher, Dr Udert is also a lecturer at ETH Zurich for process engineering in water and wastewater treatment.


Lizhong Zhu
Zhejiang University, China

Lizhong Zhu is a Professor in Environmental Science and Director of Faculty of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. His research mainly focuses on interfacial behavior of organic pollutants and its regulation technology, which are essential to understanding source-sink dynamics, predicting bioavailability, and developing new pollution control materials and methods.

Our first Editorial Board Meeting!

Issue 1The first Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology Board Meeting was hosted in Chicago last week and it was an absolute success, with an astonishing 100% of attendance. It was an incredibly busy day, full of development ideas, plans for exciting new projects and long term vision plans.

We aspire to be the premier journal in the area of water resource management for the built environment, and our team is working enthusiastically to achieve this goal. To that end, we have assembled a tremendous group of respected global leaders in the area of water research and technology for our editorial board and associate editors.

There are also several practical advantages to submitting to Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology: we have no page or word restrictions, fast publication (< 90 days), colour figures are free, and if accepted, our team in Cambridge will work tirelessly to promote your work through social media and our blogs. Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology Special Issue

Are you currently doing research in an area of potable water reuse?

We are delighted to announce a special themed issue, dedicated to recent advances associated with the potable reuse of water, which will be published in 2015 in Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology.

The Editor-in-Chief David. M Cwiertny, and Associate Editor Stuart Khan, are encouraging submissions highlighting research technology and engineering development at the leading edge of potable water reuse.

This special issue will combine a variety of topic areas that are relevant to Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology. Submissions in the following areas are welcome:

•           Technical innovations facilitating potable reuse

•           Human health risk assessment of potable reuse

•           The role and efficiency of environmental buffers in indirect potable reuse

•           Monitoring strategies in potable water reuse systems

•           Assessment and regulation of potable water reuse projects

•           Public perception of direct and indirect potable reuse

Introducing Editorial Board Member, Lutgarde Raskin

We are delighted to introduce Lutgarde Raskin as an Editorial Board Member for our new journal Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology.

Lutgarde Raskin

Having completed her Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1993, Lutgarde is now the Altarum/ERIM Russell O’Neal Professor of Engineering at the University of Michigan.

Lutgarde has worked on a variety of biological water treatment processes.  Her current research focusses on anaerobic microbial processes for energy recovery from waste streams, and microbial processes in drinking water systems, including biological filtration, disinfection, and microbial ecology of distribution systems and premise plumbing.  In her research, she uses cutting-edge molecular tools to characterize and optimize water quality process performance.

Lutgarde’s Inspiration:

I am inspired by the complexity of the microbial world and the astonishing progress we have made in microbial ecology over the past few decades. This progress continuously motivates me to rethink engineered systems so we can better harness the power of microorganisms to treat water and recover resources from waste streams.

Introducing Editorial Board Member, Long Nghiem

We are delighted to introduce Long Nghiem as an Editorial Board Member for our new journal Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology.

Long Nghiem

Long is an Associate Professor for the School of Civil Mining and Environmental Engineering at the University of Wollongong in Australia where he completed his PhD in 2005.

Long’s research expertise covers a range of membrane separation processes, including pressure driven membrane filtration, forward osmosis, membrane distillation, facilitated transport membrane, membrane electrolysis, and membrane bioreactor. Current research work of his membrane separation laboratory focuses on the development of a membrane separation platform for the recovery of clean water, energy, and nutrients from wastewater. Long was the Vice President of the Membrane Society of Australasia from 2010 – 2014 and is currently a member of the Managing Committee of the IWA Membrane Specialty Group.

My aim:

To provide clean and affordable drinking water to all and to transform wastewater treatment into ‘biorefineries’ for energy and fertilizer production through innovative membrane processes.

Introducing Editorial Board Member, Mike Elovitz

We are delighted to introduce Mike Elovitz as an Editorial Board Member for our new journal Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology.

Mike Elovitz

Mike completed his Ph.D. at the Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, Oregon Health and Science University. He has been a Research Scientist at the US Environmental Protection Agency since 1997.

Mike conducts research for the Treatment Technology Evaluation Branch in the Water Supply and Water Resources Division of the Office of Research and Development’s National Risk Management Research Laboratory. His current research projects focus on computation fluid dynamics modelling approaches to ozone contractor design and halonitromethane formation during chlorination. Mike also investigates mixing in baffled ozone contractors using 3D lased-induced fluorescence and reactive transport model.

Mike’s passion:

I’m not sure why I care about the environment as much as I do! I guess that if it comes from a place within that can’t be explained, then – even  for a scientist – it may not need a rationalization.

Introducing Editorial Board Member, Peter Vikesland

We are delighted to introduce Peter Vikesland as an Editorial Board Member for our new journal Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology.

Peter Vikesland

Peter is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech, USA. He completed his Ph.D. in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The University of Iowa in 1998.

Professor Vikesland’s research interests include nanomaterials in the environment and improved sensors for drinking water. His research on the environmental implications of nanotechnology examines the effects of solution chemistry on the aggregation and dissolution of environmentally relevant nanoparticles. Peter is the director of the Virginia Tech Sustainable Nanotechnology Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Program, where the primary goal is to facilitate the incorporation of sustainable design concepts in the nanotechnology field. Peter’s research group is interested in the development and testing of sensor technologies for the detection of environmental contaminants, with a particular emphasis on the use of Raman spectroscopy to detect biological and organic compounds. He is also works to evaluate drinking water disinfectant reactions with aqueous contaminants, focusing on disinfectant reactions with pharmaceutical and personal care products.

Peter’s inspiration:

My children are my inspiration. For their benefit I’m continually inspired to work to improve the world and better understand our ever evolving role in it.
