Professor Henry Snaith elected Fellow of the Royal Society

We are pleased to announce that Professor Henry Snaith, of the Clarendon Laboratory at Oxford University and Energy and Environmental Science Advisory Board member, has been elected a fellow of the Royal Society. Fellows of the Royal Society are elected for life through a peer review process on the basis of excellence in science and we would like to congratulate Henry on this achievement.

As head of the Photovolatic and Optoelectronic Device Group, Henry leads an interdisciplinary research team which focusses on optoelectronic materials synthesis, device development and characterisation with the primary focus of developing low cost photovoltaic concepts. Henry has pioneered the development of hybrid materials for energy and photovoltaics and the recent discovery of highly efficient perovskite solar cells has received much attention by the academic community and by industry as a low-cost alternative to silicon photovoltaics.

Meet Chengdu Liang: Energy & Environmental Science’s newest Advisory Board member

Energy & Environmental Science (EES) is delighted to welcome Dr Chengdu Liang as an Advisory Board member.

Chengdu Liang is a scientist at the Center for Nano-phase Materials Sciences, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA. His research focusses on energy conversion and storage, catalytic nanomaterials, mesoporous materials and metal and metal oxide/sulfide nanoparticles. He is well known for his work on developing lithium-sulfur batteries and lithium-ion batteries.Energy & Environmental Science

Meet Dan Wang: Energy & Environmental Science’s newest Advisory Board member

Dan Wang is a professor at the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on the design and synthesis of porous, layered and nano-structured materials and their applications in energy storage and generation and environmentally friendly catalysts. His interests include dye sensitized solar cells, photocatalysts, lithium ion batteries, and other energy applications.

New EES Advisory Board Member: Dr Chris McNeill

Photograph of Professor Chris McNeillWe are pleased to announce that Dr Chris McNeill of Monash University in Australia has joined the Advisory Board of Energy & Environmental Science.

Chris obtained his Bachelor of Mathematics, Bachelor Science with Honours and PhD from the University of Newcastle, UK. He spent six years at the University of Cambridge, UK, as a Research Associate and an EPSRC Advanced Research Fellow, before taking up his position as Senior Lecturer and Future Fellow with the Department of Materials Engineering at Monash in 2011.

His research interests include organic semiconductor device physics, polymer solar cells, organic field-effect transistors, structural properties of organic semiconductor films and synchrotron-based soft x-ray techniques.

Henry Snaith joins EES Advisory Board

Photograph of Henry SnaithEnergy & Environmental Science is delighted to welcome Dr Henry Snaith of the University of Oxford to our Advisory Board. Dr Snaith is an expert on photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices and is a Senior Research Fellow of Jesus college.

The research carried out in his group covers both improving the absolute performance of existing technologies as well as undertaking fundamental studies to better understand the photovoltaic process.

The work includes:

  • developing novel routes to fabricating functional nanostructured composites
  • integration into solar cells
  • device fabrication and characterisation

Excellent research by young investigator recognised by EES

Photograph of kisuk KangWe are delighted to announce that Professor Kisuk Kang of Seoul National University (SNU) has been chosen by the Energy & Environmental Science Board to receive the inaugural Energy & Environmental Science prize for an excellent research paper published in EES by an outstanding young scientist. Professor Kang’s article “Flexible energy storage devices based on graphene paper” was selected from a strong shortlist of papers that had also received a lot of attention from the community.

Kang is professor of materials science and engineering at SNU where he also received his B.S. His Ph.D at MIT was on the design of electrode materials for lithium batteries. Before he joined to SNU, he was a professor at KAIST, Korea. His research lab at SNU focuses on developing new materials for LIB or post-Li battery chemistries such as Na, Mg batteries and metal-air batteries using combined experiments and ab initio calculations.

Professor Mercouri G. Kanatzidis joins EES Advisory Board

Photograph of Mercouri G. KanatzidisEnergy & Environmental Science is delighted to announce that Professor Mercouri G. Kanatzidis of Northwestern University, USA has joined the Advisory Board of the journal.

Professor Kanatzidis’ research covers the design, synthesis, synthetic methodology, in-depth characterization, manipulation and potential applications of new substances with novel chemical, physical, or electrical properties. The work includes the solid state chemistry of chalcogenides, gamma ray detector materials, new thermoelectric materials, non-oxidic solids with open-framework structures, intermetallics from molten Al, Ga and In and redox active chalcogels.
